[Update, Nov. 16] There remained fewer than 100,000 ballots still uncounted after the Nov. 3, 2020, General Election, according to the latest information available from the LA County Registrar-Recorder’s office, based on data released on Friday, Nov. 13.
On Nov. 10, the office wrote that the estimated number of outstanding ballots stood at 142,715, as vote-by-mail ballots continued to arrive. On Friday, results from another 50,093 ballots were released, taking the total outstanding below the 100K mark.
[Update, Nov. 6] An estimated 610,800 ballots were still uncounted at the close of the week on Friday, Nov. 6, three days after Election Day in LA County. That was according to the LA County Registrar-Recorder’s Office, which announced an updated estimate of uncounted ballots on Friday afternoon.
Of those, about 512,600 were vote-by-mail ballots, 87,000 were conditional voter registration ballots, 2,000 were provisional ballots and 9,200 were miscellaneous ballots, including “ballots that have write-ins, are damaged, need to be remade, or require further review,” the registrar’s office described.
On Friday, data from an additional 183,414 ballots was released. Those votes did not alter the Malibu City Council candidate standings, which can be found here.
[Update, Nov. 5]: On Thursday, Nov. 5, LA County released voting data for an additional 156,410 ballot results tallied during the second day of vote counting following Election Day, Nov. 3. That same day, the county announced the estimated number of uncounted ballots had grown from 618,200 to 791,200, thanks to vote by mail ballots that were still streaming into the county registrar’s office.
“This estimate has been adjusted based on valid vote by mail ballots received in the mail today and the estimated number of ballots returned at vote centers and official drop boxes on Election Day,” a statement from the LA County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office stated on Thursday. In California, all ballots postmarked by Election Day and received by Nov. 20 (14 days following the election) are valid, the office clarified.
The total number of ballots counted in LA County had reached 3,538,953 by the end of the day Thursday. There were 5,709,853 registered voters in LA County in 2020, meaning that, if the county’s estimate of an additional 791,200 ballots still to be counted is correct, voter turnout in LA County for the Nov. 3, 2020, General Election could far exceed the 67 percent voter turnout reported in the 2016 Presidential Election, perhaps even reaching 75 percent.
The LA County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office announced on Wednesday evening, Nov. 4, that there remained an estimated 618,200 LA County ballots still to be counted in the November 2020 General Election.
That number included vote-by-mail ballots (520,000), conditional voter registration ballots (87,000) and provisional ballots (2,000), in addition to “miscellaneous” ballots (9,200)—such as write-ins, damaged ballots or ballots under review. A total of 3,382,543 ballots had been counted as of last tally provided on Wednesday.
Results were expected to trickle in throughout the month after Election Day, Nov. 3, with the next set of results expected on Thursday afternoon between 1–4 p.m., followed by another set of results next Tuesday, Nov. 10. Final result certification was set for Nov. 30.
