Local football player selected for bowl game

Local athlete James Townsend has been selected to play in the 2013 Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl, taking place at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Jan. 6. Townsend, a seventh-grader at St. Jude the Apostle School in Westlake Village, plays center, long snapper and linebacker for the Westlake Braves Youth Football Team and will play the same positions for the 7th-grade West All-American team during the bowl game.

The five-foot-ten, 175-pound 13-year-old has been a big contributor for his Westlake Braves youth team, which is entering the GCYFL Super Bowl Championship game this weekend with a 9-0 season record. The Braves are coached by NFL veteran Toi Cook, who played for the New Orleans Saints and the San Francisco 49ers.

Townsend played fours years in the Malibu Parks and Recreation Flag Football League while attending Our Lady of Malibu School.

The Malibu Times is the first newspaper in Malibu, serving the community since 1946.
