Three antique maps of Malibu Lagoon dating from 1877, 1903 and 1932 (pictured above, respectively), discovered by Anthony Shafer, a local cartographer and member of the city’s environmental review board, offer an evolution of the lagoon during the last century and beyond. Shafer believes the lagoon is 40 percent bigger now than it was 100 years ago. How that ties into the lagoon’s recent troubles with upstream pollution and wildlife endangerment is up for scientific debate. Maps provided by Tony Shafer
