In response to Maria Shriver’s letter, “Preparedness,” regarding wildfires, and after three Malibu brush fires last year, now is the time to mitigate the cycle of burn and re-grow that’s been going on forever. The city should cut a deal with Monsanto to supply tanker trucks of weed killer for precision aerial spraying of the burn areas within the city.
Roundup works as a foliage killer, and as the new brush begins to grow, is absorbed through the leaves and kills the roots. Then, before the next rainy season, aerial seed with low flammable aggressive ground cover such as drought tolerant Armeria Maritima. This will serve as a fire break between the city and the irresponsible SMMC’s weedlands. I’m sure that the county fire marshal could recommend spraying and seeding patterns.
