Special effects artist Stan Winston died at his Malibu home on Sunday following a seven-year battle with multiple myeloma. He was 62.
Winston’s creation during his four-decade career included the villainous machines in “Terminator,” the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park” and the extraterrestrial monsters in “Aliens.” He won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1986 for “Aliens,” in 1992 for “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” and in 1993 for “Jurassic Park.” He won the makeup Oscar for “Batman Returns” in 1992. The last movie he worked on was this summer’s blockbuster, “Iron Man.”
Winston was born in Arlington, Va. on April 7, 1946. He was interested in special effects, monster movies and puppets as a child. He graduated with an art degree from the University of Virginia in 1968. He came to Hollywood the next year. In 2001, Winston became the first special effects artist to receive a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
Winston is survived by his wife, Karen; son, Matt; daughter, Debbie and four grandchildren.
