- Topanga Canyon Boulevard reopens.
- Waze still has it wrong … and may have caused a crash.
- Malibu sits right on its own fault.
- And a poisonous snake found in the ocean .. not that far from here.
This is Malibu’s only local daily news.
It’s the (((( Friday ))) edition … from Radio Malibu …. 99 point 1 K B U U.
Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.
Topanga Canyon Blvd Reopens, 101 Still Closed
Topanga Canyon Boulevard has been repaired …. and was reopened to traffic last night.
The big rockslide 1-1/2 miles above PCH … cleaned up.
But the news headlines from Montecito and Santa Barbara are grim.
The death toll remains 17 … but another 43 people are missing.
The evacuation area has been expanded … as the California National Guard has brought in heavy machinery to clear the roads of boulders.
Natural gas has been shut off to the area … and the water is unsafe to drink.
U-S 101 will remain closed through at least Sunday.
Ferry service … the only way to get between Ventura and Santa Barbara.
Waze is wrong …
Waze Guiding Topanga Commuters Down Bad Road
As we said … Topanga Canyon Boulevard has reopened.
But yesterday ,,, there was a major crash on the detour.
Tuna Canyon Road is the tiny … twisting canyon road parallel to Topanga Canyon.
Thousands of drivers followed their Waze computers into Tuna Canyon over the last few days … only to pile up at the stop sign at the bottom … at PCH.
That explains the sudden flow of cars … impatient drivers darting into heavy traffic on PCH.
One of them apparently got nailed yesterday.
No word on injuries.
My Fault, Your Fault, Our Fault
Where is the Malibu fault?
If you live in Malibu …. your house is on it.
That’s the assessment of noted seismologist Lucy Jones … speaking before the Malibu City Council Wednesday night.
Malibu is kicking off a yearlong earthquake awareness campaign .,.. and drawing up plans to offer incentives for hardening those structures found to be at risk for collapse in a major quake here.
The entire city of Malibu sits atop the Malibu fault … says Doctor Jones.
JONES FAULT :17 QQQQ: THAT WE LIVE ON HERE.
“That’s because it isn’t vertical into the earth.
“The San Andreas goes straight down, and then as you get a little way away from the San Andreas the shaking dies off.
“The Malibu Faulty dips.
“It comes out under the water, and then, it dips down underneath this region, and that is pushing up the mountains that we live on here.” [[[[ END QUOTE ]]]]
How big is the danger??
JONES FAULT :13 QQQQ: THAT WE ARE FACING HERE.
“This is begin enough for a 6.5 (magnitude).
If it joined up with adjoining fault, you could have something bigger than that.
“You could have something on the Malibu and the Santa Monica Fault, as they line up with each other.
“And that’s the biggest thing that you are facing here.” [[[ END QUOTE ]]]
What are the biggest worries for a quake on the Malibu fault???
We’ll have that next Monday,.

CPUC Delays Fire Safety Maps
As expected ….the California Public Utilities Commission yesterday delayed another 6 months … adopting maps that show high fire risk areas in California.
That means another 6 month delay in regulations aimed at prioritizing fire safety projects.
Southern California Edison estimates that 50 percent of its power poles in high fire risk areas are overloaded … antiquated … or otherwise fail to meet load safety requirements.
And that has caused brushfires.
The company is in the final year of a plan to replace hundreds of poles in Malibu … a plan ordered after an overloaded pole caused a huge brushfire in Malibu 10 years ago.
Malibu Ratepayers May Get Relief On San Onfore SCE Bailout
Also … the issue of the last nuclear four nuclear power units in California seems to be settled.
Yesterday …. the C P U C approved plans to shut down the Diablo Canyon twin nuclear generators.
Those nuclear generators are 150 miles upwind of Malibu … and they sit on earthquake faults discovered after the plant was built..
Pacific Gas and Electric will shut down the nukes within 7 years.
And 75 miles down the coast from Malibu …. the deal to transfer 4 point 7 billion dollars in costs for the San Onofre nuclear plant shutdowns is unraveling.
In secret meetings … the C P U C president in 2014 agreed to make ratepayers pay nearly all of the shutdown costs.
Southern California Edison unintentionally crippled its own twin nuclear plant a decade ago … when it went ahead with a project to rebuild supersize the nuclear cores as they ended their lifespan.
Without getting a new federal license … the company installed radiation-powered steam generators that were so big that they literally shook themselves to pieces … causing a small radioactive leak.
Edison tried to transfer 3 point 3 billion dollars in costs for mothballing the plant to ratepayers …. rather than shareholders.
In fact … your bill has already gone up to pay for it.
But a state criminal investigation and lawsuits is unraveling the C P U C deal.
No details yet on the new deal.
But it should be noted … the Diablo Canyon shutdown will cost 241 million dollars to PG and E customers.
Edison blew through 4 point 4 billion on its failed attempt to supersize San Onofre.
Yellow Bellied Poisonous Sea Snake Arrives In OC
A poisonous yellow sea snake washed up in Newport Beach this week.
And biologists say global sea temperature warming may mean the snakes are spreading north out of the subtropics.
The25-inch female sea snake was found on the sand … near the 18th Street lifeguard tower at Newport Beach.“
The yellow-bellied sea snake lives on warm oceans all around the world — including the Baja California Peninsula.
They’ve been spotted up here during El Nino summers …. but this was the first one spotted in winter in Southern California.
