Campers display grief projects that were made during the Camp Erin-L.A. session to honor lost loved ones.

Our House Grief Support Center hosted Camp Erin-L.A. on Aug. 21-23 at the Junior Blind of America’s Camp Bloomfield site in Malibu. Children and teenagers ages six to 17 who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or guardian are invited, free or charge, to spend the weekend participating in traditional camp activities, as well as grief support, education and remembrance projects.

The weekend-long camp activities included a dance party, rock climbing, games, arts and crafts, and campfires. Grief projects included a Luminary Ceremony, where children had the chance to honor the memory of their loved one who died and say a goodbye message.

The goal of the grief camp, according to a Our House Grief Support Center, is to assist “children in understanding death-related concepts” while “allowing them to experience and express the feelings associated with the death of their loved one” and encouraging “them to continue living in their ‘new normal.’”
