“Our host community is part of a long-standing tradition of vacation rentals in the City of Malibu. We are committed to continuing to work with city leaders to enact fair short-term rental regulations that address community concerns and preserve the economic benefits of home sharing for Malibu residents and local businesses.”—John Choi, public policy manager, Airbnb
Background
• Our host community is part of a long-standing tradition of vacation rentals in the City of Malibu.
According to the most recent available census data, in 2010, Malibu had 990 homes designated for seasonal and recreational use. The recent report by city staff cites 522 current unique short-term rental units in the City of Malibu—fewer than the 2010 Census data. This shows that, despite the popularity of platforms like Airbnb, Malibu has not seen a sharp increase in the number of housing units being used as short-term rentals.
• Short-term rental hosts care about their community. Our hosts are responsible community members who are committed to preserving the character of their neighborhoods.
• We support common sense proposals that address quality of life issues while preserving the benefits for home sharing for Malibu residents, including implementing a code of conduct, 24-hour on-site requirement and a streamlined registration system.
