2017: The Year of Immigration Reform

Successful immigration reform can happen if responsibility is placed where it should be, on the shoulders of the immigrants themselves and those who employ them.

The third way uses a renewable 10-year Special Work Permit that comes with enticing benefits for both employers and workers, but the permit must be earned. The permit remains in effect as long as the laws

are obeyed going forward and both immigrants and their employers each remit a nickel for every dollar earned.

This small amount will fund a 10-year $167 billion reserve dedicated to immigration issues, including healthcare, border security, infrastructure repair, and compensation for government administration of the program.

An immigration bill based on the third way principles . . .

    ·      Creates 1.3 million jobs

    ·      Eliminates more than $5 billion in tax fraud annually

    ·      Generates $100 billion in revenue for state immigration issues

    ·      Provides $67 billion for infrastructure repair and maintenance

    ·      Distributes funds immediately for border security

    ·      Brings order and accountability to immigration

The third way upholds the rule of law, as people who have entered the U.S. illegally have already

broken the law. The efficient way to emphasize that the United States is a country of laws is to require

undocumented immigrants to enter their embassy or consulate, and then re-enter the U.S. legally after paying a flat fine of $150.

The fine is based on fines described in 8 U.S. Code § 1325 which calls for “at least $50 and not more than $250” for each such entry (or attempted entry). A flat fee is used to limit administrative costs and minimize bureaucracy—two guiding principles that help define sound public policy.

Republicans and Democrats are focusing on 2017 as the year the United States will get immigration right for the first time in over 225 years. As the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump can demonstrate true leadership—and secure a proud place in history—by bringing both sides to the middle and defining a common sense approach to immigration that brings dignity, respect and fairness to us all.
