The proposed Charter School at Point Dume is not a bad idea. It just needs to be done right. Without changes to the charter proposal it will greatly impact every child in our schools and we cannot afford that.
Change is good, but it needs to be done with all the community’s interests in mind.
Nearly every teacher from Webster, Juan Cabrillo and Malibu High schools has opposed this proposal. We can trust our child’s education to these teachers and we should listen to their concerns, such as a K-5 charter school that is open to community oversight with community members from all schools on the advisory board
No 6th grade! This will be a significant problem for our middle school and high school. Taking 40-50 students from the middle school-a loss of three or four teachers, increased class sizes. The district should either phase in 6th grade at all schools or create a separate campus.
Four out of five charter schools fail because they can’t make it financially, forcing them to poach students from schools. PDMSS must stand on its own.
PDMSS must have aggressive efforts to support a diverse student base. The school has one of the lowest minority populations in the district.
The school district must be the chartering authority. SMMUSD should not just turn this proposal down.
