Letter: Check Your Barrels

On April 26, I received two rain barrels from the City of Malibu and West Basin Water Company. These rain barrels were offered at no cost to the residents of Malibu. When I tested the rain barrels, both of them had holes in the bottom. A neighbor checked his rain barrels and found that both had holes in the bottom.

I called and emailed West Basin to inform them of the defective barrels. They contacted the supplier in Florida who in turn, contacted me. The supplier told me that he was about to order 1,000 more from the manufacturer in Canada. He said that he would send me (via FedEx) two replacement rain barrels, which also were defective.

I’m sure that all of the rain barrels are defective, so before the rains come, test yours. In an effort to conserve water, I appreciate that the City of Malibu wants us to collect rainwater, but beware that we may be providing a place for mosquitoes to multiply.
