MUSE School in Calabasas was one of three schools to receive the 2014 “Golden Carrot” award during National School Lunch Week for the school’s unique approach to serving plant-based fare to its K-12 students, according to a release from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
In addition to the award, the school received a $1,500 award to support the schools’ Seed-to-Table lunch program, which includes an instructional kitchen, gardens and greenhouse. Â
The school is in the process of transitioning to an entirely plant-based menu for the next school year. MUSE co-founders believe the lunch switch will help save greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.
A parent steering committee was also formed to ensure food served at the school would be popular among students.
A series of seminars is also planned throughout the year called MUSEtalks and will engage students in discussions about diet, health and sustainable food choices.
