A baby seal was rescued by Jeff Hall, the Marine Mammal Response Coordinator for the California Wildlife Center in Malibu. It was his third rescue of a baby seal today. The seal that came up on the beach several times this past week on Las Flores Beach was emaciated. When the seals are that thin they cannot keep warm in the water, so it probably was trying to rest and get warm in the sun.
Jeff Hall did not meet with much resistance from the seal as he approached it to capture it with his net. He carried it in the net up to his truck, in which were already two cages with seals he had rescued today, put it into a cage, and loaded the cage into the truck to take it to the Wildlife Center where it will be nurtured back to health. The center will begin with fluids and then add food possibly after 24 hours.
There was a possible fourth seal in need of rescue that Jeff Hall was on his way to check.
