Letter: Defining Art

Letter to the Editor

What were you thinking by not editing the front page story? In the article from Aug. 28, “Graffiti Problem Inundates State Parks,” the writer used the words art, artwork and artists 12 times. Graffiti is not art. Look at the photos accompanying the article. Ugly scrawls, big hideous lettering a two year old could do and amateurish grinning skulls.

Graffiti is nothing more than destructive, narcissistic, illegal, expensive vandalism of property that belongs to everyone — not the people who damage it. It was an insult to use the word art anywhere in the story and worse, giving those who did it any coverage in your newspaper.
