The cost of a senior pass for the National Park and Federal Recreational Lands is set to drastically increase on Aug. 28.

A pass covers entrance fees at more than 2,000 federal recreation sites. Although there is no entrance fee for sites in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, many other national parks require a fee or pass.

Currently, the cost for a senior lifetime pass is $10 for any U.S. citizen or permanent resident over the age of 62. On August 28, the cost of a lifetime senior pass will increase to $80 and a new annual senior pass will then be available for $20.

The cost of the senior pass is being changed due to Centennial Legislation P.L. 114-289, passed by Congress last year. The lifetime senior pass cost is being changed to match the cost of the regular annual pass.

All current lifetime senior passes and passes bought before Aug. 28 will remain valid. To buy a lifetime senior pass, visit your local district office, buy in person at select federal recreation sites, buy online at store.usgs.gov or call 1.888.275.8747 ext. 3.
