Last weekend on the televised 2017 Billboard Music Awards show, Malibu resident Miley Cyrus sang her new song “Malibu,” which she also wrote.
Cyrus became a Malibu resident when she bought a small house on two acres in Ramirez Canyon in early 2016 (as reported by the LA
Times and numerous other publications) for over $2.5 million, and moved in with her fiancé, actor Liam Hemsworth.
According to a Billboard cover story from earlier this month, Cyrus and Hemsworth share the residence with seven dogs, two pigs and two miniature horses; and she’s added a recording studio to the premises.
“In Malibu, when she’s not making music or doing two hours of Ashtanga yoga daily, Cyrus says she likes nothing better than walking her dogs or grocery shopping, where she’s generally unbothered. ‘I love talking to people, and I approach them in a normal, ‘Don’t treat me different, ‘cause I’m not’ way,’ she told Billboard. Last week, she was spotted by the Daily Mail with her mother and sister at Malibu’s Soho House.
Malibu life must have inspired Cyrus, because she just released a new album with lyrics and melodies she’s written herself (with a little assist from producer-writer Oren Yoel, who plays all the instruments.) One of those songs, “Malibu,” was her first studio single since 2013. Dubbed a “confessional cut” about her relationship with Hemsworth, it’s been streamed 30 million-plus times on YouTube and over 11 million times on Spotify since its release on May 12.
Cyrus told Billboard that she penned the tune while being driven to work on The Voice. “I drive myself everywhere, but that day I decided to Uber,” she said.
