Malibu resident and Pepperdine University graduate Mary Chuhinko is one of seven strangers who helped save the life of Jennifer Calderon by donating blood and platelets. Calderon suffered massive bleeding following the premature birth of her son last April at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
Because of confidentiality laws, most blood donors do not get the chance to meet the person who receives their donated blood. The UCLA Blood and Platelet Center changed those circumstances in this case by introducing Calderon to her donors at a donor recognition luncheon Jan. 31.
