Malibu-based runner David Torrence earned the USA Men’s 5K National Championship title at the CVS Downtown 5K in Providence, R.I. on Sept. 20. The Los Angeles native took first place out of 2,447 participants in the five-kilometer race with a time of 13 minutes and 56 seconds.
Torrence and female champion Molly Huddle were awarded $7,000 in prize money for their accomplishments. Torrence has also received national recognition for breaking the 1,000-meter American record in 2014 and for being the first man in Minnesota to run a road mile in under four minutes in 2009.
