Many of us are irreconcilably divided on other issues, but we’re in absolute agreement on Ballot Measure O. In our opinion and in the opinion of many on all sides of Malibu’s political picket fence, O’s importance to Malibu’s future with respect to preserving Open Space and Limiting Development is undeniable.
Measure O is an ADVISORY VOTE ONLY. It asks if you would support in a future election, “the City issuing $15 million in general obligation bonds … for the purpose of acquiring private property for city park, recreation and open space purposes?”
We support this “advisory vote” first, because O solves problems rather than creates them for to own the land is to control the land. Second, passage of Measure O will help the city qualify for state and federal grants. Third, the cost to taxpayer is minimal when you consider that land, once built upon, is lost forever. The actual cost will be less than $30 per $100,000 of assessed valuation — for the average homeowner in Malibu that could be less than a family dinner out.
Fourth, O is endorsed by the entire City Council and Planning Commission as well as proponents of both P and N. Finally, passage of measure O will tell our city council that we are ready to face fiscal realities — and that we hope in the near future two-thirds of Malibu voters may once again agree to work toward common goals.
This letter to the editor is the beginning of a short but vigorous campaign to educate and inform the community on O.
In conclusion, we hope you will agree with us that a yes vote on O is an essential first step toward the acquisition of Open Space of our Own.
