Letter: Death of Opinion

Letter to the Editor

How sad that in this age of super intelligence, our country has become so thought imprisoned within such a non-phantasmagorical partisan divide that many of us fear to speak our minds.

What happened to old-fashioned debate, where we listened and learned from one another, keeping our minds open to another’s viewpoint? Where has our empathy gone? Certainly, after last month’s debacle, which was patently unfair to both sides (and brought out mobs venting their vernacular regurgitations and rudeness, some even dispatching intimidatory death threats to both parties), don’t you think it’s time to put a lock on our mental bows and arrows?

Aside from Ford and Kavanaugh, also being caught in the maligning crossfire was the publisher of this weekly periodical for voicing an opinion, as well as Mr. West in La Casa Blanca, who was sincerely suggesting we should all be allowed to think for ourselves.

And so, in my opinion, I believe:

• in innocence until guilt is proven;

• in free speech but not hate-filled (and dismembering all the name-calling);

• in women’s choice over their bodies;

• Senators should never tell anyone to shut up;

• we should all know just how much all these Washington probes are costing us;

• crazies should not be allowed to disrupt congressional meetings;

• the “MeToo” movement (yes … me too) may finally open men’s eyes to controlling their natural impulses;

• in legal entry for newbies but a path for oldies to stay;

• doing all things possible to keep criminals and harmful drugs out of America;

• in no sanctuary cities harboring criminals while neglecting to protect citizens;

• in respecting our flag (having performed for our troops all over the world, the saddest sight is to see it maliciously burned);

And I believe that anger and shouting causes you to lose your power and, therefore, your argument … Didn’t your momma tell you as mine did: “You can get more with honey than you can with vinegar!”
