The much-anticipated Santa Monica College Malibu campus and LA County Sheriff’s substation will begin construction this Friday, Sept. 21. To commemorate the event, SMC and LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl’s office will host a ceremony on the same day, from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., at the site.
A host of speakers is scheduled, including SMC Superintendent/President Dr. Kathryn E. Jeffery, SMC Board of Trustees Chair Barry Snell, LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, LA County Sheriff Jim McDonnell, LA County CEO Sachi A. Hamai and Malibu Mayor Rick Mullen.
The Malibu campus will include a two-story building, multipurpose space, lecture hall, computer lab and other classrooms. The multipurpose room will also double as an emergency operations center, according to a shared statement from SMC.
The campus and substation are expected to be complete sometime in 2022.
In the shared statement, Jeffery said, “It took teamwork to bring the Malibu Campus from vision to actuality. Multiple agencies—including the County of Los Angeles, the City of Malibu and Santa Monica College—collaborated extensively to find creative solutions to fulfilling community needs within an overall vision of education, public safety, and clean water improvements for Malibu.”
