Southern California Edison is poised to cut down … or cut back … thousands of trees in Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains starting next week.

In eight days … the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will hold a public meeting that will largely shape the future of two Malibu neighborhoods.
These will be town hall-style meetings … two of them … one next Wednesday … the other one week later.
Both meetings will be identical.
Community members are invited to participate in the Malibu Middle School and Malibu High School Campus Planning process.
The content of the meetings will be identical, providing two opportunities for everyone to attend one or the other.
The Campus Plan will guide the removal of old buildings and the construction of the new campus.
These will be town hall-style meetings, with presentations followed by workshops.
There is supposed to be plenty of time for questions and feedback.
Attendees will hear from representatives of LPA, the architects who are leading the campus plan process, and site officials.
research has already been undertaken …
That research, as well as the results of the ongoing Campus Planning Committee meetings… will be presented.
And feedback will be solicited …. from the community …. on how the campus currently serves and can better serve the community. The campus is already in the process of changing.
The first meeting is nest Wednesday … April 24 at 6 p.m. at Juan Cabrillo Elementary School.
The second meeting is May 1st.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is walking back from talk about restricitng development in high fire risk areas.
Like Malibu.
Newsom on Friday released a report outlining the challenges of California’s growing wildfire threat that suggested local government “de-emphasize” building in high-risk areas around forests.
But yesterday … the governor walked away from that.
He told the Associated Press that a desire to live near nature is embedded in California’s ethos.
He explains he doesn’t want to block home building in places like Malibu .
Says the governor …and we quote … “There’s something that is truly Californian about the wilderness and the wild and pioneering spirit.
“I’m not advocating for no (building).”
More than 2.7 million Californians live in areas state fire officials say are at a very high hazard for wildfires.
Nearly 180 cities and towns are in those very high hazard areas.
A recent analysis by the McClatchy newspapers showed that a higher percentage of homes built after new building codes took effect in 2008 survived the fire … than those built before.

The Agoura Hills Animal Care Center is getting some help.
The local animal shelter … which serves Malibu and cities over the hill … ran through its supplies to assist pets and help pet owners affected with the Woolsey and Hill fires.
The California Communities Foundation is advancing 20 thousand dollars to replenish the supplies.
The funds will be used to replenish medical and other supplies.
The equipment and supplies will assist in emergency preparedness by supporting the functions of an on-site medical triage team … for future disasters.

Malibu has won another award …. this time for its new sewer plant.
The WateReuse Association – California chapter – named the City of Malibu the 2019 “Recycled Water Agency of the Year.”
Malibu has completed phase one of its Civic Center Water Treatment Facility …
It was finished last year and coverts sewage from Civic Center area commercial buildings into clean, recycled water for irrigation.
Pipes are still being installed for the recycled water to be used … but much of it is being flushed away into injection wells.
The plan is to use the recycled water for landscaping at parks … office buildings and houses int he Civic Center area.
The WateReuse Association describes itself as a coalition of utilities that recycle water, businesses that support the development of recycled water projects, and consumers of recycled water.

Reports and editors uncovered the latest in a string of scandals at the university of Southern California … this one involving a gynecologist who seriously sexually abused female students at the student health center.
