Two people were injured Saturday in a two-car crash on Pacific Coast Highway at Trancas Canyon Road that authorities say could have been caused by drag-racing. A man driving a Dodge Viper collided head-on with a Nissan Pathfinder carrying a woman and her two young children Sunday at 12:25 p.m., Lt. Jim Royal of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station said. The Pathfinder rolled at least once and landed on the roof, while Viper spun out of control and caught on fire, Royal said. The woman was airlifted to UCLA Medical Center with leg injuries and the driver of the Viper was taken to UCLA by ambulance with chest pain and bruising on his head. The children were unharmed.
Traffic was blocked on Pacific Coast Highway in both directions for at least one hour.
The crash occurred when the Viper drifted across the center line and collided with the Pathfinder, Royal said. Witnesses told authorities the driver of the Viper could have been drag-racing, but the man is not currently under arrest. Authorities intend to investigate the drag-racing possibility based on a combination of witness accounts, forensic evidence and interviews with the driver, Royal said.
