Last week’s storm resulted in major debris- and mudslides on Pacific Coast Highway near Point Mugu, and now Caltrans is estimating a full closure could remain in effect for three to four more weeks.
Caltrans estimates “12 to 15” mud and rockslides took place in the spots where last year’s Springs Fire burned, and mud is 4 to 6 feet deep in certain spots. The closure stretches from Yerba Buena Road to Las Posas Road.
The onslaught pushed k-rails across the roadway, and covered lanes in rocks and mud.
“More slides are expected from additional storms along the coast. A contractor has been hired to remove mud and debris, re-position K-rails that were displaced by mud slides, and repair highway shoulders and rip rap that were damaged or washed out,” a Caltrans press release stated.
Motorists and cyclists must take alternate routes.
