Malibu High School’s Theatre Department will present Mary Zimmerman’s Tony Award-winning play “Metamorphoses” at 7 p.m. on Dec. 4, 5, and 6 and at 2 p.m. on Dec. 7 at the school.
With its opening night just days after the attacks on 9/11, Zimmerman appropriated “Metamorphoses,” based on ten of the familiar myths from Ovid’s first-century epic poem, for 21st century audiences by giving a contemporary spin to Ovid’s tales of iconic gods and hapless mortals who struggle with a full range of human emotions, including lust, greed, envy and love.
The Malibu High version features a cast of 15 actors playing multiple roles. Director Jodi Plaia has set each tale in a different period of human history to underscore their ancient timelessness, but recommends the production for audiences ages 13 and older for its mature themes.
