Federal disaster funds have been made available for the city of Malibu to help recover from the effects of severe storms that struck the city in January. The funds will cover damage to both individual and public property.

Public Works Director Yugal Lall said the public projects consist of repairs to Fernhill Drive, repairs to the drainage system in Trancas Canyon as well as clearing the roads in Malibu of general debris. The costs of the public project repairs, which Lall says will commence by the end of the week, are estimated at $700,000. Lall said the private damage would be assessed on a case-by-case basis by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

If you were affected by the disaster and you need help you are encouraged to call the FEMA toll-free application line at 800.621.3362. For those with speech or hearing impairment, the special number to call is 800.462.7585. Both numbers are available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, until further notice.

For those with Internet access there is also the option of applying on FEMA’s Web site: www.fema.gov.
