Crews from the Southern California Gas Company began the first phase of a project Monday on Pacific Coast Highway to relocate part of an underground natural gas pipeline. The relocation is part of a Caltrans project aiming to stabilize the roadway on PCH from Latigo Canyon Road and Via Escondido Drive.

Workers are expected to complete the project in six to eight weeks, according to the City of Malibu.

Phase One of the relocation is expected to last one week: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26 through Friday, Nov. 30.

Traffic should not be affected during the first phase. Phase Two, set to begin next week and last for an unspecified amount of time, will require intermittent nighttime lane closures as crews excavate and replace parts of the pipeline between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Phase Three, the final phase, will limit northbound lane use.

The [number] 1 northbound lane will be open to vehicular traffic and the [number] 2 northbound lane will be open to pedestrians and bicyclists,” according to the city.
