Dancers take the stage in a special performance of “The Nutcracker” on Friday morning for more than 475 students at Pepperdine University.

Malibu Civic Ballet Company held a special performance of “The Nutcracker” and Q&A at Pepperdine on Friday.

More than 475 students were bussed in from the greater Los Angeles area for this unique experience. For many, it was the first time to see a ballet or be in a theatre. The students were able to ask questions directly of the ballet performers, adding to this extraordinary experience.

The inquisitive students asked very thoughtful questions, such as, “How long does it take to learn to dance like that? How long do you practice a day? How long does it take for you to get dressed? Why do boys want to dance like ballerinas? Why do the boys wear tights instead of pants?”

Both performers and students enjoyed the morning’s special performance. President of the Malibu Ballet and Performing Arts Society Deborah La Gorce Kramer said, “Some students leave forever changed, wanting to learn more about classical music and dance.” She adds, “Four kids want to learn ballet and have approached us for scholarships!” after Friday’s performance. The hope to educate and inspire young children to explore the arts was realized.
