Bittersweet, Howdy Kabrins is surrounded by his loyal mangers Yubel Espinoza, Benjamin Martinez and staff on their last day.

Howdy’s Taqueria, a longtime restaurant staple in the Malibu Civic Center, closed its doors for good on Monday after nearly 20 years in business.

The closure was bittersweet for owner Howdy Kabrins, who now has plans to open a new restaurant in the space once occupied by Granita Restaurant in the Malibu Colony Plaza Shopping Center.

“It’s a new adventure … Howdy’s in Malibu is an experience, it’s not just the food, you know, it’s the friendliness, the relationship we have with all our customers that really sets us apart, and the tradition will continue,” Kabrins said Monday.

Howdy’s Taqueria first opened in 1995. Kabrins plans on opening Howdy’s Malibu Cantina sometime next year.
