Over 4,000 students, teachers and volunteers from throughout Los Angeles participated in the 23rd annual Kids Ocean Day Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup at Dockweiler State Beach last Thursday, May 19. The event was a culmination of a year-round school assembly program established by the Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education to teach Los Angeles children about the adverse impacts of ocean pollution.

The cleanup began with a kick-off involving Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education and Kids Ocean Day Founder Michael Klubock and other officials. Students then worked together to pick up trash on the beach before ending the day by creating an aerial art mosaic.

The Los Angeles Kids Ocean Day is one of six such events statewide that are sponsored by the California Coastal Commission. Over 8,000 children in total are expected to participate in this year’s Ocean Day events.

“The oceans are dying and the kids know it,” Klubock said in a release. “Most of them already know that the trash on the street ends up in the ocean. Kids Ocean Day helps make them aware that they can have an impact.”
