Malibu has rarely come together more cohesively or more passionately than it has in the effort to prevent state approval of the proposed Liqufied Natural Gas Terminal for construction of a deadly blast distance off our shore.
But there is only one sure way to stop this environmental disaster from becoming a reality, and we have only five days to effect it. If each of Malibu’s 5000 families can reach out to ten California voters outside our city, if we can thus persuade and assure 50,000 votes for John Chiang for State Controller and for John Garamendi for Lieutenant Governor and get those votes to the polling booths, BHP Billiton’s sea-going factory, poisoning our coast and hastening global warming, will be stopped in its tracks. Chiang and Garamendi would be ex-officio members of the State Lands Commission and it would be within their power, and certainly within their commitment to the environment, to send BHP Billiton’s lobbyists back to Australia empty-handed.
There is no other sure stopper. This must be done, and Malibu has the will-power and the persuasion power to do it. Let’s stand up as a community to impact the victory of Chiang and Garamendi. Let’s exercise American democracy here and show that Malibu can be California’s first line of defense against corporate despoilers.
