Seventeen local fifth-graders were recently awarded scholarships from the Malibu Woman’s Club.

The students earned the honors through an essay contest themed “Pay it Forward.” For their essays, they thought up something they could do to help someone else, performed the act of kindness and then wrote about the experience. The students described a grand scope of good deeds, from thoughtful things they did in the community to projects in Honduras and Africa. They read their essays to club members, parents, friends, principals and teachers at a Woman’s Club luncheon.

“Brilliant, talented and generous are words to describe the 17 winners of the annual essay contest,” Woman’s Club scholarship chair Charlotte Ward said. “They give us reason to face the future optimistically.”
