It is with intense exasperation that I observe the latest attack on four of our current City Council members. In their defense, I would like to point out a few important facts regarding the so-called Brown Act violation. The council followed the advice of our city attorney. The first trial court agreed with the City attorney. The appeals court did not. Now, every city attorney in California (represented by the League of California Cities) wants to join Malibu in petitioning the California Supreme Court to overturn that ruling.
Does that say anything about the ruling? It says that our city attorney is just one of many city and county attorneys who believe that the appeal court’s opinion was wrong.
And I guess what bothers me even more is that it seems to me that this latest campaign against the current council emanates from a personal and political animus that has become a plague on our local political landscape.
