Malibu High School will now reopen to students on Wednesday, Dec. 12, due to a delay in air quality testing results as confirmed by the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.

The district is still waiting on the results for a full clearance—in a letter to families, MHS Principal Dr. Cheli Nye said, “Preliminary verbal results from all testing, including lead, asbestos, particulates and PCBs, indicate that we will have full clearance for teachers and staff to return on Tuesday, December 11th, to prepare for student return on Wednesday, December 12th.”

The air quality testing—and cleaning—began in the aftermath of the Woolsey Fire a month ago.

MHS will be holding a Get Your Stuff Day, similar to one held at the beginning of the school year, on Dec. 11 from 1-3 p.m. for students who need to replace items such as textbooks, identification cards and gym clothes.

Webster Elementary and Point Dume Marine Science schools have already reopened. (However, the schools were closed on two separate occasions since reopening due to heavy rains.) Juan Cabrillo Elementary School is scheduled to start classes tomorrow, Dec. 11.

The Dec. 12 reopen date is contingent on the results of the air quality testing, which will be posted to the district’s website at www.smmusd.org.
