Because of an unhealthy air quality forecast Saturday, a local air management agency has prohibited wood-burning fires in Malibu and surrounding areas until midnight on Friday.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) says residents are banned from burning wood or manufactured logs in their fireplaces until 12 a.m. Friday night to “[minimize] harmful wood smoke from residential wood burning.”

Wood smoke contains hundreds of contaminants including PM2.5, a pollutant linked to increased emergency room visits and hospitalizations, as well as increased risk of heart attacks and early deaths,” according to SCAQMD.
