Seventh grade language arts classes at Malibu High School recently finished reading the Gary Paulsen novel Dogson, about an Alaskan Inuit teen who takes a lone journey by dogsled to learn about his heritage and move toward self-reliant adulthood. The students then donated 158 blankets and several dozen toys for dogs to a nearby no-kill shelter as an accompanying service activity.
Their teacher, Mary Yarber, said she was “astounded by and proud of my students for the tremendous effort on behalf of the homeless dogs.”
To make up for deficits in educational funding, The Shark Fund buys novels for the English Department to insure that each student has a copy.
