Street resurfacing is postponed among city confusion.

A civic center shopping center wants to get bigger … to help build a skate park for the city.

And the bikers are asking the county supervisors to override the sheriff on the proposed takeover of P C H on a Sunday

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the Thursday edition of the news … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Cliffside Drive!

——

The street resurfacings that was scheduled to start Friday is postponed.

City officials say they want to come up with a clear plan for every residence that will be affected.

Which side of the street will be closed, at what times, and which driveways will be blocked?

Those questions were unclear as late as Wednesday evening — the city is working with a contractor who is affected by things like weather, truck availability, batch plant schedules, etc.

Streets that are to get slurry sealing work — now delayed — include Deerhead Road and Harvester Road above Malibu High … Bonsall Drive in Zuma Canyon … Cottontail Lane and Bunnie Lane near Broad beach … and Bailard Road and Lunita Road in Trancas.

There will be no access to driveways on the side of the street where the work is being done for 2-4 hours while the street surface dries.

The city says a new date will be set for the work as soon as possible, with at least 72 hours advance notice.

The creation of a skateboard park for Malibu kids has run into yet another problem.

Not enough parking at the proposed site.

The city has been given a small plot of land behind a proposed shopping center … called La Paz … next to the city library.

The developer got to increase the size of the shopping center by 33 percent in exchange for giving the land to the city.

And since it’s behind a shopping center and not good for much else … the city has examined putting a skateboard park there.

But it would need 50 parking spaces … and there’s not enough room for that.

So now … the city is proposing parking cars at the shopping center.

Fine with us .. says the shopping center owner … if you let us increase the shopping center by 10 thousand square feet so se can add another restaurant.

The shopping center would take care of parking …. the city would allow the shopping center to get bigger.

The proposed deal goes before the Malibu City Council Monday.

Organizers of the motorcycle takeover of Pacific Coast Highway are asking the L-A County Board of Supervisors to … in effect … override the L A County sheriff and the city of Malibu …  to allow the event.

The Run To The Flags has been run for three years now … with over a thousand motorcycles moving in a pack from Ventura County to central Malibu.

Despite being told not to … the bikers have blocked intersections and run red traffic lights as they ride through Malibu on the only major road in the city.

This year’s ride is scheduled by the organizers for September 12th… but the city has not approved the bikers taking over Bluffs Park for three days to set up … and clean up.

The sheriff’s office has told the bikers they must obey traffic laws and cannot close intersections.

Last year’s event included an illegal … 20 minute closure of P C H and Malibu Canyon Roads … as the bikers turned left from P C H up the canyon … then made illegal Uturns and parked next to Pepperdine.

It took 20 minutes for one thousand bikes to execute that maneuver, … and there was an injury traffic crash in the middle of all that.

Malibu officials say the organizers have stated this year that they intend to forcibly close

intersections and do not want to follow the rules of the road as required by LA sheriff’s department.

The sheriff’s order is now being appealed by the group to the L-A County board of supervisors … which does not control the sheriff’s department except for its budget.

The annual motorcade and big party at Bluffs Park needs permits from the city … the sheriff … the fire department and the state Department of Alcohol Control … for the sale of beer and hard liquor at the city-owned Bluffs Park.

City staff has asked the city council  …. what to do about the permit request to shut down the city park over three days for the event.

How many houses are being rented out through Air B and B in Malibu?

The city has about 5 thousand residences.

And of those 5-thousand … 321 are listed on Air BandB.

Others are no doubt listed on other listing services … as well.

The average price at those 321 rental units in Malibu …1 thousand 86 dollars a night.

And 87 percent of those rentals are for an entire home or apartment … as opposed to 12 percent being for a room.

Entire homes or apartments highly available year-round for tourists, probably don’t have the owner present, could be illegal, and more importantly, are displacing residents.

This data comes from a website called Inside Air B and B …. which tracks the extent of rental units switching from monthly tenants …. to overnight hotel purposes.

Speeding on the 1-0-1 freeway west of Malibu has become such a problem … that the C-H-P is bringing in an airplane to catch speeders from above.

Te Ventura County Star reports that aerial enforcement of the 65 mile per hour speed limit is occurring on the 1-0-1 between Ventura and Santa Barbara.

Aerial C H P patrols are also occurring on highways 1-18 and 1-26 north of Malibu.

And a local C H P lieutenant tells the Star he absolutely has plans to use airplanes for speed enforcement in eastern Ventura County.
