Malibu’s home-grown radio station, 99.1 KBUU, enters its sixth year of transmitting this week by knocking off some major-market competition at the 70th Annual Golden Mike news excellence awards in Universal City.
The station won the best feature reporting Golden Mike for its daily “Mo In The Morning” surf report, featuring surf reporter Mo Chilingar and producer Hans Laetz.
The volunteers at KBUU were up against paid staff at the major Los Angeles NPR and commercial radio stations, and its first Golden Mike award was heralded by Radio & Television News Association of Southern Californiaas as an unusual achievement for a volunteer radio station.
KBUU is believed to be the first low-power FM radio station in the nation to beat the corporate and NPR station competition in a major-market news excellence competition.
