The Modal Tease String Band visits the Malibu Library for a performance in the outdoor courtyard on Saturday afternoon, playing a variety of old-time tunes.

The Malibu Library hosted its first summer concert in the outdoor courtyard on Saturday afternoon. Malibu locals and visitors enjoyed listening to the Modal Tease String Band, including performers Jim Hamilton on banjo; Cliff Latimer, guitar and vocals; and Belinda Thorn, violin and vocals. The band performed a variety of favorites, including “Lulu Walls” by the Carter Family, “Train on the Island,” “Fall on my Knees” and “St. James Infirmary,” to name a few.

Thorn explained that the Modal Tease String Band grew from the “Los Angeles old-time music scene,” and that “there are a lot of old-time jams in L.A. We all met playing at various jams, and realized we were really drawn to a particular kind of old-time tune: the modal tune. A modal tune is one that contains a flatted 7th,” Thorn explained.

People flowed in and out of the courtyard and others sat under a tree for the duration during the two-hour performance. The Malibu Library hopes to continue concerts and events in the outdoor courtyard where there’s ample space to accommodate a large group.
