Eamon Harrington hosted this political season’s first city council candidate forum last Thursday, Aug. 30. The event was held a the Red Ladder Gallery in the Malibu Civic Center and was attended by a full house of locals and all five candidates vying for a seat on council this November: Karen Farrer, Lance Simmens, Olivia Damavandi, Jim Palmer and Mikke Pierson.
Quotes from the evening are courtesy of KBUU News.
Lance Simmens—“I’ve only physically lived in Malibu for three years, but in spirit I’ve lived here forever—and moving here was like coming home … I’ve spent over four decades in public policy and governmental positions.”
Jim Palmer—“I want to listen to everybody’s opinions, I want to do the right thing and, again, I think the most important thing is to preserve the quality of life that we have here in Malibu.”
Mikke Pierson—(speaking during a Sept. 2018 city council candidates’ debate)“I spent the last six years as a planning commissioner and as a public works commissioner before that, and if elected … I would be the only city council person with any land use experience on the city council.”
Karen Farrer—“The school dstrict is not run by the city, but local control is the one thing that we can fight for. We [wouldn’t] have here what we have here, if we had been passive. We would not be a city if we had been passive.”
