The developers of Trancas shopping center are terrible neighbors. They tried to evict a beloved business, they’re trying to light up a “dark skies” neighborhood and they’re turning Trancas Canyon and PCH into deadly danger.
I thank Planning Director Joyce Parker-Bozylinski for telling these developers they’re not getting permits until they make their center safer for cars, pedestrians, bicyclists, bus riders, customers and neighbors.
These developers have a lot to do to fix their dangerous shopping center. Planning commissioners, planning director, city council and city manager have to make them do it.
Here’s what they must do before they’re allowed to open their dangerous shopping center:
Put dedicated right-hand turn lanes into their driveways. Remove parking spaces on Trancas Canyon that back out into highway traffic. Create a safe and accessible turn-around and waiting area for the MTA bus. Complete the condition of approval required by the Planning Commission to provide an easement for a road for emergency evacuation of Malibu West.
Lives are at stake, but these developers don’t seem to care. Malibu West HOA had to spend tens and tens of thousands of dollars to get what the Planning Commission required these developers to do. The track record of these developers is shameful.
What do you say, Jim Thorsen, Joyce Parker-Bozylinski, Mayor LaMonte, Malibu City Council, and Planning Commissioners? Will you put public safety first and require them to make Trancas shopping center safer? Or will you care more about developers and let them open a shopping center you know is dangerous? Will you fix the traffic and safety now or let residents suffer the way they have at Paradise Cove?
