Letter: Fish Friendly

Letter to the Editor

I would like to rebut two letters that were printed in the Aug. 20 edition of The Malibu Times, “Species speak” and “Sad hunting,” condemning the photo of my husband and son alongside a 242-pound halibut.

During the summer, my husband and I, along with our two children, traveled to Alaska and enjoyed some wonderful family time fishing together. The taking of the halibut was not merely for sport and, while it was indeed a “trophy” due to its size, it was not caught for that reason alone. We will be consuming the halibut and sharing it with many friends and family, while the smaller fish that was also pictured, was enjoyed the same day it was caught.

Our family has been fishing together since our children were young, and we have traveled to some incredible places because of it, creating unforgettable family memories along the way.

Most of our fishing happens to be tag and release. My kids and husband have all received multiple awards from the Billfish Foundation for their conservation efforts on behalf of billfish. But when we do choose to keep our fish, we enjoy it and share our bounty with friends.
