Local photographer Stephen Hicks died Feb. 6.

Friends and family are mourning the loss of Point Dume resident Stephen Hicks, who passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6. He was 58.

Hicks was a renowned photographer who lived in Malibu with his family for about 20 years, according to close friend Mikke Pierson. Pierson met Hicks 16 years ago and coached AYSO soccer with Hicks for many years thereafter.

“We used to surf and go mountain biking together every weekend,” Pierson said.

He recalled Hicks’ passion for photography and the outdoors, plus his popularity in Malibu.

“He knew everybody,” Pierson said Friday. “He was just a larger than life figure.”

Hicks may have died of complications stemming from a blood clot, but an autopsy is pending, Pierson said. Friends and family are hoping to hold a service for Hicks on Feb. 23 or 24, Pierson said.

Hicks is survived by his wife, Lani, son, Ryder, 18, and daughter, Kailee, 15.
