The projects are supposed to improve coastal water quality, preserve and enhance coastal resources, and enhance coastal access within Santa Monica Bay.
Projects include restoring the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve, kelp forests off Manhattan Beach … and assisting in the recovery of abalone populations.
The money will also go towards acquiring new open space for habitat preservation and building the wildlife crossing over the 101 Freeway at Liberty Canyon.

Santa Monica continues to chip away at its airport.
Last week .. the City Council approved planting grass on 15 hundred feet of abandoned runway.
Both ends of the runway were chopped off 16 months ago … to make the runway less attractive to jets.
This is part of the plan to wrap up aviation activities at the airport by 2028.
Pilots groups are still furious.
But the city Council approved spending $3 million did take out the pavement and plant grass at either end of the runway.
Santa Monica Airport is the closest small plane run way to Malibu … and in years past was responsible for much of the small plane air traffic over the Malibu coast.

Rent control has been extended in the unincoporated areas of Los Angeles County.
The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday extended rent-control and eviction protections in the unincorporated areas until next year.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the supervisors continued a temporary cap on rent increases to 3% annually until the end of the year.
They also expanded protections requiring landlords to show “just cause” before evictions.
This is a stopgap ordinance.
It gives county officials more time to craft a permanent ordinance regulating rents in the areas under the jurisdiction of the county government, a patchwork of neighborhoods home to 1 million residents, including hundreds of thousands of renters who would be affected by the expanded rules.
Malibi area supervisor Sheila Kuehl voted for the rent control.
She says many people in Los Angeles County are having difficulties just accessing housing.
