Forget Earth Day; the City of Malibu for years has declared April Earth Month, hosting a range of activities throughout the month to bring attention to ecological issues and celebrate the planet. Both the city and Pepperdine University are hosting events for the month:

* “Waste to Waves” polystyrene foam collection. Drop off at Malibu City Hall upper parking lot, April 22-26. White No. 6 block only, no peanuts or takeout food containers. “Sustainable Surf will recycle the polystyrene foam into foam cores to make more sustainable surfboards.”

* “Waste to Waves” neoprene wetsuit collection. Drop off at Becker Surf Shop, 23755 Malibu Road, April 1-30. “With the latest expansion of the ‘Waste to Waves’ project, Sustainable Surf will recycle the wetsuits into Suga yoga mats made in American factories.

* Pepperdine Earth Day Fair. Wednesday, April 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Malibu’s Environmental Sustainability Team will be doing outreach about the city’s environmental programs and policies and giving away reusable, stainless steel smoothie straws with brush cleaners at Pepperdine University’s Earth Day Fair.” The fair will include student presentations, activities and food.

* Malibu Library Speaker Series Earth Day special, April 10, 7 p.m. at Elkins Auditorium on the Pepperdine Campus. “The April Malibu Library Speaker Series, in partnership with Pepperdine University’s Climate Calling Conference during Earth Month, features Distinguished Professor of Biology Dr. Stephen Davis.” Visit malibucity.org/libraryspeakers.
