The status of the Coastal Development Permit for the renovation of the high school is an important item that needs to be clarified. No work can proceed without coastal permits, and if a project is appealed, the time delay can be great.

As I understand, the high school renovation planning approval has been appealed to the Coastal Commission. With the support of our City Council, the renovation portion of the application could be granted an “emergency permit” and renovation work can then proceed at the high school. This would eliminate implementation of stopgap measures as the district waits for the time-consuming appeal process to be resolved.

City Council needs to facilitate and assist the district so that the permit is expedited through the coastal process. The situation will only continue to deteriorate if construction work is not allowed to proceed immediately.
