Two much-anticipated construction projects are set to begin in “downtown Malibu” this month, according to reporting by KBU News.
First, work began Tuesday on a traffic signal installed on Pacific Coast Highway near the Malibu Beach Inn. That stoplight was approved by the California Coastal Commission and, according to city officials, did not require local approval to begin. Local businesses received notice that work was to begin this week.
Beginning March 14, the intersection widening project at Pacific Coast Highway and Civic Center Way is set to begin, which will include installation of a double left turn lane onto Webb Way from eastbound PCH, a right turn lane onto Civic Center Way from westbound PCH and the removal of bike lanes through the intersection.
“The project does include lane closures and night work,” City Manager Reva Feldman told KBU News in an email. “Yes, the city was aware of the bike lane change–there was no other viable solution to the project.”
A letter sent to local businesses from Taslimi, the contractor in charge of the project, provides a rough outline for when construction is set to take place.
“Pacific Coast Highway will remain open during the day, with intermittent lane closures during nights and the non-peak daytime hours of 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Shoulder closures are expected intermittently throughout the project. Continuous access will be maintained to [businesses].”
Work is expected to be completed by May 25, according to Taslimi.
