With more than a decade of experience, Dr. Kiumars Pharrahpur, also known as Dr. Q, is now bringing his practice of qigong, acupuncture, tui na and herbology to Malibu.

“It’s the most natural way of healing,” Dr. Q said. “There is no use of drugs, no anti-inflammatories or injections. You just help the body to fix itself.”

Dr. Q graduated from Emperors College of Oriental Medicine with honors and has accomplished advanced study in tui na (active release technique) in Beijing, China. He has offices in Encino and Palm Springs as well.

By combining acupuncture, qigong (cultivating energy), tui na, herbs and other unique techniques in his treatment, Dr. Q has had success in treating arthritis pain, neck and back pain, plantar fasciitis, knee pain, carpal tunnel, digestive disorders, gynecological problems, as well as weight loss and addiction.

“It’s fuel for my body to strengthen my qi and be able to transfer that qi to my patients,” Dr. Q said.

After learning about the side effects of taking prescribed medication for arthritis, people are afraid of drugs and turning to alternative treatments for pain.

“It’s easier to take care of pain with acupuncture and qigong,” Dr. Q said. “Drugs mask the problem and don’t take care of it at the root. Qigong takes care of it at the root and you’ll never face it again.”

Since joining Malibu Health Club on Feb. 10, Dr. Q has seen a very positive response from the Malibu Community, with many patients returning for continued treatment.

“I have so many patients with chronic migraines who have suffered throughout their lives,” Dr. Q said. “With acupuncture, qigong, tui na and herbal formula, I was able to heal them and they never had to deal with a headache again.

“I have patients who come in with shoulder pain and have a lot of difficulty moving their arms,” Dr. Q added. “I find the inflammation, put the needles where they need to go, let them sit for about 25 minutes and, with the first treatment alone, patients are 50% better.”

Depending on the level of pain and for how long a patient has been suffering, treatments range from two to eight sessions.

“When it comes to dealing with pain, in Western medicine you have to get injections or anti-inflammatory drugs, which eventually damage the body and doesn’t get rid of the pain,” Dr. Q said. “With acupuncture, you don’t put anything in the body. You use your own energy and blood to heal itself.”

Dr. Q took over for Dr. Om, who was with Malibu Health Club for more than two decades until he passed away. Dr. Q is now taking over for his patients, who would come from all over the world to see him.

Malibu Health Club has been around for 23 years. Other services include detoxification, massage, yoga, meditation, nutrition, chiropractic care and exercise.

“We are unique because we have an integrated program,” co-owner Gordon Schwartz said. “We can coordinate your services and address your physical needs, from exercise to nutrition to health care. You want your massage therapist, trainer and acupuncturist all talking to each other. You might see one of them one day and another one a different day. You want them to be coordinating your needs.”

Schwartz interviews and hand selects all doctors and professionals. He is looking to expand and add additional doctors and professionals to the staff, including a professional who will practice hypnotherapy.

“There’s so many things about your health,” Schwartz said. “Our yoga program connects your body to your mind. People are really becoming more conscious and aware of how energy passes throughout the universe and from person to person.

“People come in and swear that we saved their lives,” Schwartz added. “It’s a beautiful location with an ocean view, very clean, not crowded. This place does not feel like the gym. They feel comfortable at our place.”
