The City of Malibu will host the 17th annual Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering at Malibu Bluffs Park, 24250 Pacific Coast Hwy., next Saturday and Sunday, April 11-12. The two-day cultural event is open to the public and will celebrate and honor Malibu’s original residents, the Chumash Indians.
Festivities will include a variety of Native American foods, including fry bread, arts and crafts, tribal ceremonies, dance, special guest performances and Chumash history storytelling.
Native Americans from hundreds of tribes from many western and southwestern states will gather at Bluffs Park to sing, dance and celebrate. Each day will begin with a performance led by Native American actor Saginaw Grant and an invocation and prayer service led by Chumash-Tataviam elder Alan Salazar.
The family-friendly festival is free and will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 12. Parking and shuttles will be available at the corner of Civic Center Way and Webb Way.
