Robert Roy van de Hoek, who is running for City Council, has issued a statement that his opponent, Sharon Barovsky, has decided not to seek a Sierra Club endorsement for fear of risking a denial. Barovsky, he says, has declined being interviewed by Sierra Club officials after receiving a detailed questionnaire to be completed by both candidates.
“Sierra Club’s questions are tough, but obviously designed to determine the strongest environmental candidate for Malibu Council,” stated van de Hoek. “The issues in this election are clear: Do we want to double the size of the Malibu Lagoon’s wetlands or do we want to double the traffic on Pacific Coast highway? A vote for me is a vote for the wetlands and maintaining Malibu’s natural beauty.” van de Hoek has submitted his answers to the questions of the Sierra Club and is awaiting a final decision regarding his endorsement.
One of the questions is: “Please explain your position on Measure P – the Right to Vote on Development initiative.” Another is: “What will you do if elected to insure that projects that come before the Malibu City Council are in compliance with the California Coastal Act?” Candidates are also asked to state reasons why the Sierra Club should endorse their campaign.
